SC To Hear Plea Against Alleged Encroachment On Tribal Lands

New Delhi/Guwahati, March 5, 2019

The Supreme Court(SC) on Tuesday agreed to hear a plea on the alleged encroachment on the tribal lands.

The tribal and the Dalit organizations on March 5th 2019 called for a nationwide shutdown demanding the Centre to promulgate two ordinances in a move to secure their rights that have been affected by apex court decisions.

Earlier the top court had passed an order to carry eviction of 10 lakh tribals and other forest dwellers across the country including the tribal belt of the Northeast region.

Later staying the eviction order, the SC had ordered the concerned states to submit affidavits whose claims over forest land were rejected under the Scheduled Tribes and Other Traditional Forest Dwellers (Recognition of Forest Rights) Act, 2006.

The states were directed to file their affidavits by July 10th 2019.

Despite the stay order, the tribal groups claimed that the Centre failed to protect their community’s rights in the court of law.
