In a bid to make the students future-ready, the Board of Secondary Education, Assam (SEBA) will introduce Commerce as an elective subject for class IX and X students starting from 2020 and 2021 respectively.
Speaking to TIME8, RC Jain, SEBA chairman said, “The new subject will help the students of class IX and X if they want to pursue the commerce stream after their board examination. We have subjects like Advance Mathematics for students keen to pursue science stream and also, subjects like History, Geography for the Arts stream inclined students. But, there was no subject for the students who would opt for commerce stream. This elective subject will provide preliminary knowledge about the stream.”
The SEBA will introduce commerce textbooks that will cover the topics of accountancy, banking, insurance and many more.
“This new initiative will also help the students who look for opportunities to earn livelihood right after completing matriculation. The knowledge of banking, insurance, etc. will help the students in carrying out their own business ventures later in their lives,” Jain added.
It may be mentioned, the Assam Higher Secondary Education Council will introduce Bihu – the most important festival of Assam – as an elective subject for the students of class XI and XII. The decision has been taken in a bid to conserve the traditional practices of Bihu.
