Guwahati: A 47-year-old man died of mucormycosis, commonly known as Black Fungus on Wednesday at around 1:30 pm in Dibrugarh, becoming the second case of the fungal infection in Assam.
The patient was admitted to Assam Medical College and Hospital (AMCH) on June 15 and was detected with the fungal infection after a test done by a joint team of the Microbiology and Ophthalmologist departments on Saturday night.
Talking to the media persons, AMCH superintendent said, “After recovering from COVID-19, the patient developed symptoms of Black Fungus as he suffered from severe headache and red-eye after which he was admitted to AMCH.”
“We have been treating him for 10 days with doses of the fungal infection. After conducting, x-ray and MRI, we found that the virus has spread all over his body. Our team immediately conducted an operation for six long hours and it turned out to be successful,” he added.
The superintended further said, “He was fine for 2-3 days but later the virus turned into sepsis and we shifted him to ICU. We kept the patient in the ICU for seven days but the virus caused multi-organ failure and he passed away.”
Reportedly, the deceased identified as Subhash Sahu was a resident of Lakhimpur district and was earlier admitted to Lakhimpur Civil Hospital after being tested positive for COVID-19. Later on June 12, he tested negative for COVID-19.
The first death due to the fungal infection was reported on May 19, where a 27-year-old male patient died at a privet hospital in Guwahati.
It was known that the person hailed from Nagaon district and tested positive for COVID-19 on May 6. He later tested negative but was infected with the Black Fungus.
