Sikkim celebrated Maghe Sankranti festival with pomp and gaiety. Maghey Sankranti is one of the most auspicious occasions for the Hindu community. This sacred day marks the beginning of a propitious phase of nature’s transition and the wheel of time. It also marks the beginning of warmer and longer days in the run-up to the next equinox.
Maghe Sankranti or Makar Sankranti is also a tradition marking the arrival of the spring season. The festival has a religious and spiritual significance and is celebrated in different parts of the country as per the local customs, traditions, and beliefs.
The festival is one of the most famous cultural festivals of Sikkim, Maghey Sankranti Mela or commonly known as Maghe Mela is celebrated with extreme grandeur in various places of the state. And the state-level festival was celebrated at Jorethang which was attended by Chief Minister PS Golay along with other cabinet members.
Jorthang Maghey Mela has its history associated with an agricultural fair that was held at Jorethang in the year 1955 on the occasion of Makar Sankranti, an auspicious day which marks the beginning of the holy month of Magh in the Hindu lunar calendar. Maghe Sankranti or Makar Sankranti is also a tradition marking the arrival of the spring season.
