Sexual harassment complaint filed against Sports Authority of India swimming coach in Assam

Guwahati: A case has been registered against Assam swimming coach and in-charge of Sports Authority of India (SAI) training centre, Mrinal Basumatary, accusing him of sexual harassment.

The issue first came to light when some athletes of the SAI training centre at Solal Gaon in North Lakhimpur reported sexual harassment against their coach during a selection trial.

Following the complaint, on Friday, the SAI said that the FIR was lodged at the Paltan Bazar Police Station in Guwahati.

The national sports body said, “As SAI adopts a zero tolerance policy towards sexual harassment cases, the same will be followed up so as to ensure that justice is delivered to our athletes.”

“Taking into account the gravity of the matter, the FIR was lodged. Simultaneously, the matter has been referred to the Internal Committee of the Regional Centre of the nodal sports body and a probe has already started. The committee will submit its report at the earliest,” the SAI said in a statement.

A case was registered against Mrinal Basumatary, the police are yet to take action against the coach.

The matter is being dealt with the “highest priority due to the highly sensitive nature” of the issue, sources said.
