Jawaharlal Nehru University(JNU) student and alleged mastermind of Shaheen Bagh protest Sharjeel Imam who was brought to Guwahati from New Delhi on February 20th, 2020 is currently undergoing marathon interrogation by the Assam Police.
During interrogation, he has reportedly revealed to have visited the state in 2016. He also reportedly added that the videos circulated in the social media are real and said at the heat of the moment but his speech has been misinterpreted by the people The Assam police are trying to ascertain facts and verifying his statements.
“He admitted that he visited the state in 2016. We are trying to verify the visits and his phone calls. All the details he has given needs examination and verification” Additional Director General of Police (law and order), GP Singh said.
In a shocking video shared by BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra, Imam is seen making controversial statements saying that Muslims are in such numbers that they can cut out the entire Northeast from the rest of India. Post the controversy police of six states Bihar, Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Uttar Pradesh and Delhi booked Imam under the relevant sections of the IPC.
The Assam Police sought his custody and subsequently was brought to the state amid tight security via Dibrugarh bound Brahmaputra mail. He was immediately taken to Mahendra Mohan Choudhury Hospital (MMCH) for a health check-up. He is currently under 4-day Assam police custody.
Meanwhile, Assam police is trying to find out Imam’s “Assam connection”. They are trying to find if he had any connection with members of the radical Islamist outfit Popular Front of India (PFI)’s local unit.
