Agartala/ Guwahati, December 6: Extreme poverty compelled a father to sell his 8 month old baby girl for a mere 200 rupees in Tripura recently. The shocking deal took place at Teliamuras in Maharanipur district of West Tripura. The father claimed poverty led him to take such a step.
This isn’t the first such incident to be reported from Tripura in recent times. A tribal woman, belonging to the BPL or below poverty line category had sold her son for the same amount to an auto driver in April this year. Though she had denied any such deal, the child’s father had confessed and said he was totally against it, yet the mother sold the child for Rs 200. The father said his child was taken to Machkumbhi, a nearby village.
A few weeks prior to that, a similar incident was reported in Ultacharra ADC village in Gandacherra sub-division of Dhalai District. Another tribal woman had sold her 11 day old son to bear the cost of the treatment of her ailing husband. The child was sold for Rs 5000.
There are frequent reports of parents making their children work as domestic servants in households, or in factories and sometimes even send them to work in brothels for money from all across the country.
5 incidents of parents selling off their children to combat poverty have been reported over a period of two years from Tripura alone.
