A part of the world’s highest battlefield, Siachen Glacier is now open for tourists to visit. This was informed by Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on October 21st, 2019 on Twitter as the Ladakh region has tremendous potential in tourism.

The tweet read, “Ladakh has tremendous potential in Tourism. Better connectivity in Ladakh would certainly bring tourists in large numbers. The Siachen area is now open for tourists and Tourism. From Siachen Base Camp to Kumar Post, the entire area has been opened for Tourism purposes.”

He has also urged the people who will visit Ladakh and Siachen to go for eco-friendly travel options. This step of the government has been hailed by netizens as many have expressed their excitement to visit the glacier.

Well, who doesn’t want to visit the highest battlefield in the world, but before making your plans you need to know that it isn’t the same as a trip to Goa with your friends. The intake of tourists will be regulated by the Indian Army as they will be your host during your stay there.

The Army will do a background check of all prospective tourists and medical condition and then decide who is fit and healthy to deal with the extreme weather conditions in Siachen.

It may be mentioned that the Indian Army had regularly carried out expeditions in the glacier in the 1970s, but had stopped in 1984 when India and Pakistan fought a war over the glacier.

The Defence Minister is currently in Ladakh where he inaugurated a strategically located bridge over the Shyok river which will provide easy connectivity with the Daulat Beg Oldi sector along the Line Of Actual Control with China.
