Sikkim Assembly Elections: SDF, HSP Ready For Battle, Announces List Of Candidates

Gangtok, March 16, 2019

The Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF) president and Chief Minister Pawan Kumar Chamling on Friday announced the names of 18 SDF candidates for the Sikkim Assembly elections. Chamling has dropped nine sitting MLAs, including three ministers and Speaker K.N. Rai.

Announcing the names, Chamling said that he will contest from Poklok Kamrang seat in South Sikkim and from his traditional seat, Namchi Singithang in South Sikkim which he had won by a large margin in the 2014 elections too.

The 18 candidates are — Dechen Ongmu Bhutia (Yoksam-Tashiding), N.K. Subba (Maneybong-Dentam), I.M. Sharma (Gyalshing Barnyak), K.S. Lepcha (Rinchenpong), Pem Norbu Sherpa (Daramdin), Dhan Kumari Kami (Salghari-Zoom), Pawan Chamling (Poklok Kamrang), Pawan Chamling (Namchi Singithang), The other candidates are Pharwanti Tamang (Melli), Birjan Tamang (Namthang Rateypani), G.M. Gurung (Temi Namphing), Raj Kumar Thapa (Rangang Yangang), Ugen T. Gyatso Bhutia (Tumen Lingi), D.T. Lepcha (Gnathang-Machong), Em Prasad Shara (Namcheybung), G.T. Dhungel (Upper Tadong), Pintso Chopel Lepcha (Gangtok) and Pintso Namgyal Lepcha (Djongu).

HSP fields 6 candidates

On the other hand, Bhaichung Bhutia’s Hamro Sikkim Party (HSP) also announced its first list of names for the Assembly elections on March 15th, 2019.

The HSP has chosen a total of 6 candidates and its president Bina Basnett will contest from Upper Tafong seat in East district while D S Limboo will contest from Yangthang assembly constituency in West District.

The other candidates are – Social workers Indra Suji (West Pendam), Anush Rai (Namcheybung). The remaining two candidates, Athup Lepcha, a former minister, has been given the ticket to contest from Djongu assembly seat and women social activist Kamla Rai will contest from Rangang-Yangyang.

The HSP will announce its candidates, on remaining assembly and one Lok Sabha seat in the next couple of days informed party spokesperson Biraj Adhikari.

Elections in the state’s 32 member Assembly and the lone Lok Sabha seat will be held on April 11th, 2019.
