Taking notes from Madhya Pradesh, the Chief Minister of Sikkim has expressed keen interest in having a separate department for happiness for the people of the state. Madhya Pradesh is the first state in the country to set up a ‘Happiness Department’ on the lines of the neighbouring country Bhutan.
The Minister for State for Heavy Industries and Public Enterprises Arjun Ram Meghwal called on Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang on August 27th, 2019. Meghwal heaped praises on Sikkim as he emphasized about the happiness index in which the state is leading in the country.
Meghwal also apprised the Chief Minister about the World Happiness Report which is an annual publication of the United Nations sustainable development solutions network where out of 156 countries, India is lying low at 133.
Meghwal also informed how Madhya Pardesh is aggressively working towards achieving a commendable happiness index and they have created separate Ministry for happiness, named Anand Mantralaya while suggesting that Sikkim can have their own separate ministry for happiness and lead the nation in this field.
Tamang liked the idea of having a separate department for happiness. “My Government will definitely think about the suggestion put forward by the Minister for State,” the Chief Minister said.
During the meeting, Tamang also expressed his concern over the notification of the Ministry of Home Affairs where sacred peaks of Sikkim including Mt Kanchenjunga has been opened for mountaineering expeditions.
Meghwal assured that he will take up the issue with the concerned Ministry and was hopeful that the Centre Government will definitely try and protect the sentiments and religious values of Sikkimese people.
