The students from Assam undergoing studies at the Sikkim University staged a protest against the contentious Citizenship Amendment Bill in Sikkim’s Gangtok on December 7th, 2019.

The protestors expressing their resentment against the proposed Bill has staged a sit-in at the Six-Mile area under the banner ‘Rudrabiplab’.

It may be mentioned that the former Indian football captain Bhaichung Bhutia had earlier strongly opposed the Bill. ”The Bill is against the interest of the people of Sikkim. I would like our Sikkim Government to make its stand clear on the Bill,” the founder of the Hamro Sikkim party said.

Sikkim Loksabha MP Indrahang Subba has also opposed the Bill. The Bill was approved on December 4th, 2019 by the Union Cabinet and will be tabled in the Lok Sabha on December 9th, 2019. The Bill seeks to grant citizenship to non-Muslim refugees facing religious persecution in Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan.
