Singer Shankuraj Konwar joins candlelight vigil in Mumbai against Citizenship Bill

Guwahati, January 11: Singer from Assam of Nakhyatra-fame, Shankuraj Konwar came out in support against the passage of the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016 Mumbai.

A candlelight vigil was taken out on Thursday evening at the Shivaji Park in Mumbai and hundreds came out in support of the agitations going on against the Bill in Assam.

Konwar shared pictures on his social media handles where the protestors were seen holding placards, which read as – ‘We oppose Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016’, ‘Save Secularism’, ‘Do not divide Assam in the name of religion’ and so on.

It may be mentioned that the Citizenship Bill was passed at the Lok Sabha on Tuesday.

The Bill was stalled in the Rajya Sabha following strong opposition from the Congress along with other parties.

The Citizenship Bill was introduced in the Lok Sabha in 2016 to amend the Citizenship Act, 1955. The Bill amends the Citizenship Act, 1955 to make illegal migrants who are Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains, Parsis and Christians from Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Pakistan, eligible for citizenship.
