Guwahati: Six hardcore militants from the National Socialist Council of Nagaland – Isak-Muivah (NSCN-IM) and the Eastern Naga National Government (ENNG) surrendered before an Assam Rifles and Arunachal Pradesh police in the insurgency affected Tirap, Changlang and Longding (TCL) region on Wednesday.
Security personnel also received two pistols and ammunition from the surrendering insurgents.
The several successful operations carried out by the Assam Rifles and the Arunachal Pradesh police with the help of the local populace, insurgent activity in the TCL region have decreased dramatically.
According to an official, the surrendered cadres stated that underground organisations’ atrocities against the local community pushed them to lay down their arms and join the mainstream in order to show their support for underground outfits’ inhumane deeds.
The surrendered cadres stated that the NSCN groups’ wrong practise of using locals as human shields made them realise the inhumane motives of these underground outfits toward the people of Arunachal Pradesh and encouraged them to work together to extinguish the insurgency in TCL, official added.
Pema Khandu, the chief minister of Arunachal Pradesh, stressed the importance of rebels quitting insurgency and joining the mainstream in accordance with the Underground Surrender Policy under Government Reforms and Prudent Financial Management, for which a budget of Rs 5 crore has been set aside.
Earlier, more than sixty important insurgent leaders and cadres from the TCL region have shunned the insurgent groups and joined the mainstream giving a huge blow to the underground outfits.
