Snake bites man in Goalpara, family rushes to ‘kobiraj’

Goalpara, October 10: At a time when the Assam Government has launched a campaign against superstitious practices, locals and family members of a man, who was bitten by a snake, are relying on the “divine” help of a kobiraj (quack) to “heal him”.

Mahar Ali, a resident of Karbala Pahartali area, was bitten by a snake while he was working outside his house and fell unconscious.

Instead of visiting a doctor, Mahar was taken to a local quack.

A group of men came to his house and sang songs and performed “healing” rituals to “cure” him.
