GUWAHATI: Eminent social activists Medha Patkar and Sandeep Pandey joined jailed leader Akhil Gogoi’s 84-year-old mother Priyada Gogoi on Wednesday to add muscles to the ongoing poll campaign for the jailed leader.
Gogoi was fighting from the Sibsagar constituency that would go for the poll in the first phase of the state elections on March 27. Family and party members of Raijor Dal have been campaigning for Gogoi who has been under judicial custody now for over a year.
Priyada Gogoi, from Selenghat in Jorhat district, has been camping in Sivasagar district for over a week and campaigning for her son and president of Raijor Dal, the newly-floated political outfit of her son.
Joining her, Medha Patkar said, “Akhil Gogoi has set an example of his will to serve the people of Assam and that’s why he is continuing his fight even from behind the bars. He is fighting for the rights of the common from the beginning and it’s clear that he will give a strong contest this poll.”
Patkar echoed the jailed leader and asked the people of Assam to choose their leaders wisely.
Priyada Gogoi added, “I am campaigning for my son. I want to see him free. Now it’s the people of Assam and Sibsagar who can make him free. Winning this election will be the first step.”
Akhil Gogoi was allotted with the symbol of an LPG cylinder and contesting as an independent as his party failed to get the Election Commission of India’s recognition yet.
The National Investigation Agency (NIA) had arrested him in December 2019 for his alleged role in violent anti-Citizenship (Amendment) Act protests across the state. Last year, he was admitted to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) for COVID-19 treatment and remained there for other ailments.
