Guwahati, January 20: Former Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi on Sunday lambasted Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and State Finance Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and dubbed both of them as ‘accidental Axomiyas’.
Gogoi said, “Both Sonowal and Himanta should have taken birth in Bangladesh. They were accidentally born in Assam. I call them ‘accidental Axomiyas’.”
He added, “Sonowal recently opened his mouth on the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill because he might have got a dressing down from Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He speaks about protecting jati, mati and bheti (community, home and hearth) but he acts differently.”
The Citizenship Bill was introduced in the Lok Sabha in 2016 to amend the Citizenship Act, 1955. The Bill amends the Citizenship Act, 1955 to make illegal migrants who are Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains, Parsis and Christians from Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Pakistan, eligible for citizenship.
