Guwahati, January 12: A delegation of the top Assam Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders has flown to New Delhi to meet Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh amid widespread protests over the decision to grant ST status to the six communities of the state.
The team includes Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, Assam Finance Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma including Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) chief Hagrama Mohilary.
It is reported that the team would suggest some measures over the Bill keeping in view of the present scenario and further preventing any untoward situation in the coming future.
The communities that are proposed to be included in the ST category include Koch Rajbongshi, Tai Ahom, Chutia, Moran, Matak and tea tribes of the state.
The Coordination Committee of the Tribal organisations has raised strong opposition against the passage of the Bill and had called for complete shutdown in Assam on Friday against the Bill.
It may be mentioned that Assam is already on the boil after over the controversial Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016.
