Sonowal Condemns Serial Blasts In Assam, Says Culprits Will Be Booked

Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal on January 26th, 2020 condemned the serial blasts in Assam on January 26th, 2020, at a time when the country is celebrating its 71st Republic Day.

Sonowal said that the “cowardly attempt” shows the “frustration of the terror groups”. The Chief Minister also mentioned that the government will take the sternest action to bring the culprits to book.

“Strongly condemn the bomb blasts in a few places of Assam. This cowardly attempt to create terror on a sacred day only exhibits the frustration of the terror groups after their total rejection by the people. Our Govt will take the sternest action to bring the culprits to book,” Sonowal tweeted.

Five blasts, including two by improvised explosive devices (IED), shook Assam on the morning of January 26th, 2020. The two IED blasts took place in Dibrugarh and one grenade blast each were reported in Sonari, Duliajan and Doomdooma. However, no one has been injured in the blasts. All the blast took place within 30 minutes.

In Dibrugarh, an explosion took place at the busy Graham Bazar and another beside a gurudwara on AT Road. In Charaideo, another blast was reported infront of a shop at Tiyakghat Tiniali area near Sonari. The locals claimed that bike-borne suspected militants had lobbed a grenade and fled from the area in Sonari.

Assam DGP Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta said that top police officials and other security personnel have rushed to the blast spots and collected splinter. “An investigation has begun. It is being probed that who is involved in this,” he told ANI.

The banned militant outfit United Liberation Front of Asom (Independent) (ULFA-I) is suspected to be responsible for the blasts. The outfit led by fugitive Paresh Baruah had asked the citizens to ‘boycott’ Republic Day celebrations in the state and remain indoors.

The blasts come days after 644 militants from eight rebel outfits laid down arms in presence of Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal at a ceremony in Guwahati on January 23rd, 2020. They included 50 ULFA-I cadres.
