GUWAHATI: Congress will form a Special Women battalion force for the safety of the women in the state if comes to power, said Bobbeeta Sharma, general secretary and media chairperson of Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) on Monday.

Addressing the media, Sharma and other women leaders of the party- Nandita Das, Roslina Tirki, Bismita Gogoi and Juri Sarma alleged that the Sarbananda Sonowal led state government has failed to ensure the safety and security of woman as well as in punishing culprits of crimes against woman.

Sharma said, “Official statistics have shown the exact picture and crimes against Special Woman in Assam have constantly gone upwards since the Sonowal led government took over Dispur. Incidents of rape have gone up manyfold.”

Assam has the highest crime rate against woman, which was about three times more than the national average, said the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB)’s latest report.

According to the report, over 177 woman in every one lakh female population in Assam were victims of different crimes in 2019.

State police records have said that while 1779 incidents of rape had happened in 2016, it shot up to 1952 in 2019.

“The numbers are disturbing. Due to such a situation, women in the state feel unsafe. Similarly, women from outside the state too get scared due to the high rate of crime against women. If our government comes to power, we have decided to form a special unit for the women’s safety,” the Congress leaders said.
