Guwahati, March 5, 2019
Firebrand peasant leader Akhil Gogoi training guns at the Sonowal led BJP government on March 5th, 2019 asserted that the six communities of Assam should be granted Schedule Tribe(ST) status within the next three days.
“The Assam government should grant ST status to the six communities within three days. They should further make public all the discussions made so far regarding the Bill. Ahead of the last union cabinet meet tomorrow the government should take a final stand,” said Gogoi.
He further added, “The Bill was lapsed due to stiff opposition from Sarbananda Sonowal, Himanta Biswa Sarma, Hagrama Mohilary and Biswajit Daimary,”
It may be mentioned that the ST bill lapsed in the recently concluded session of the Upper House of the parliament – Rajya Sabha on February 13th, 2019. The bill was rejected by the Rajya Sabha on January 9th, 2019 in its session.
He further questioned the government on the present status of the ST status.
Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh in the month of January 2019 announced to grant ST status to the six communities of Assam without harming the right of the tribes currently enjoying the tribal status.
The communities that are proposed to be extended ST status include, Koch Rajbongshi, Tai Ahom, Chutiya, Matak and Moran.
