GUWAHATI: As directed by state’s Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, the Home Department of the government of Assam on Wednesday initiated steps for transferring of one Deputy Commissioner of Police, four Assistant Commissioners of Police, two Officers-in-Charges, two Sub Inspectors, and one Assistant Sun Inspectors of the city police who took part in a night party on a river cruise over the Brahmaputra violating the lockdown and curfew norms in the city.
Notably, a video of Guwahati police officials partying, violating lockdown rules went viral on Monday night following which state’s Chief Secretary Kumar Sanjay Krishna ordered a probe on July 7. Sources said it was a birthday party of one of the senior cops from Panbazar police station in which several numbers of police personnel were present. In the video, they were also seen in consuming liquor.
On Wednesday, state’s Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal also reviewed the COVID-19 induced lockdown scenario in Kamrup Metro district and took stock of the various measures undertaken for reducing the spread of coronavirus in the district and rest of the state at a meeting held at Assam Administrative Staff College.
In an official statement, the Chief Minister said that due to the strict implementation of lockdown protocols rate of positivity among the tested cases has come down from 36% to 16% in Kamrup Metro. “This lockdown would go a long way in breaking the chain of spread and managing affectively the transmission of the pandemic in Guwahati and other parts of Kamrup Metro district,” he said.
According to the statement, the Chief Minister also directed the district administration and police to ensure the supply of essential commodities so that people in the district does not have to face hardships during the lockdown period.
“It was also decided in the meeting that the NGOs coming forward to distribute food to the poor citizens would be able to do so after obtaining necessary permissions from local police stations,” the statement further said.
He also asked the Chief Secretary and DGP along with health department to monitor the situation in the rest of the state as well and asked the district administrations of other districts to thoroughly examine all options before going for measures like lockdown in their respective districts.
