Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) legislator from Assam’s Hojai constituency Shiladitya Dev came down heavily on the Election Commission of India (ECI) for allegedly marking people ‘D’ voters in the electoral rolls.
Dev said, “The ‘D’ marking against the voters in the electoral rolls is of no use. The ECI cannot decide the citizenship status of any individual. The power has been vested upon the Foreigners’ Tribunals to decide whether a person is a citizen or a foreigner. If a citizen is ‘Doubtful’, his or her name should be omitted from the electoral rolls”.
The lawmaker also mentioned about filing a petition appealing the ECI to stop “harassing people” by marking them as ‘Doubtful’. “What is ‘Doubtful’? The entire system including the ECI is doubtful,” he added while addressing a press meet on August 18th, 2019.
D voter, sometimes also referred to as Dubious voter or Doubtful voter is a category of voters in Assam who are disenfranchised by the government on the account of their alleged lack of proper citizenship credentials.
Dev further alleged that the inclusion and exclusion of names in the National Register of Citizens is done based on the surnames. “Only the economically backward section of the people are being targetted and marked ‘Doubtful,” Dev claimed.
