Student Bodies Block NH 15, Stage Protest Against Subansiri Project In Assam

The AJYCP has announced a mass gathering in Guwahati on September 13th, 2019 to discuss on repercussions of construction of the Subansiri project

The student bodies including the Tai Ahom Yuba-Chatra Sanmilan, Assam Jatiyatabadi Yuba Chhatra Parishad(AJYCP) on September 9th, 2019 reiterating their demand against the shutdown of the hydro-electric project over Lower Subansiri staged a massive agitation across the state.

While the Lakhimpur unit of the Tai Ahom Yuba-Chatra Sanmilan staged a National Highway(NH)- 15 blockade in the district demanding shut-down of the construction works of the dam, the members of the AJYCP gathered at the Gogamukh camp and shouted slogans against the government.

The AJYCP agitators from Dhemaji, Lakhimpur, Majuli, Biswanath districts formed a human chain and challenged the government against the construction of the 2,000-MW Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project by the National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC) Limited.

The students’ body announced a mass gathering in Guwahati on September 13th, 2019 to discuss on repercussions of construction of the Subansiri project and further threaten to intensify their agitation if the government do not take a decision on pen and paper.

It may be mentioned that on August 23rd, 2019, the NHPC signed a Memorandum of Agreement with the Assam government for implementation of the Lower Hydroelectric Project in Gerukamukh in Dhemaji district. The Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project is the largest Hydro -Project of the country, presently under construction with an installed capacity of 2000 MW and annual generation of 7421.59 MU and is located on the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border.
