On January 18, 2022, a case was registered against Bin for allegedly abducting and forcibly marrying a minor following which he was arrested but later granted bail after a few months.
While speaking at the state legislative assembly, Sarma informed that over one thousand people are still in custody out of 4,363 cases of child marriage since February 3.
During the ongoing Budget Session of the Assembly, the official said that at least 3,483 persons have been arrested under the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act, 2006, official said.
The arrested teacher has been identified as Nasiruddin Sheikh.
The district police arrested the deceased girl’s husband, Sahinur Ali, and father, Aynal Haque.
On Monday, a 49-year-old man allegedly raped a 13-year-old girl in Nijarapar under the Birubari area in Guwahati.
Chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma earlier said that the government has been also preparing a roadmap for proper rehabilitation of the victim girls.
Notably, on January 23, the state’s chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that strict measures would be implemented across the state to keep a check on the spike in child marriages.
The arrested groom identified as Sanuar Hussain hailing from the Gubardhana area had planned to marry a 16-year-old minor girl.
The child marriage took place around two months back and the family faked the girl’s age, sources said.
