Tarun Gogoi demands Akhil Gogoi’s Release

Akhil Gogoi was arrested in December 2019 and has been in judicial custody

Guwahati: Former Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi on Tuesday stated that charges imposed on KMSS leader Akhil Gogoi should be lifted and he should be released at the earliest.

Speaking to the media, the former Chief Minister said alleged that the charges put on the peasant leader were false charges and the government should immediately remove those charges.

He stated that the government should release Akhil Gogoi from judicial custody.

Tarun Gogoi further alleged that people who have been protesting against the “unconstitutional” Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) are being prosecuted and harassed by the police and other agencies by charging them with severe charges which most of the time are false.

He claimed that even former Congress MLA Sushanta Borgohain and several other leaders were allegedly interrogated and harassed on such charges.

It may be mentioned that Akhil Gogoi was arrested on December 12, 2019 for allegedly protesting against the CAA and had been under judicial custody since December 27.

Even on Tuesday 22 activist belonging to KMSS and SMSS were detained by the police in Morigaon district for protesting and demanding Akhil Gogoi and his associate’s release from the jail.
