Guwahati, January 6: Former Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi lambasted Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Sunday over the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016.
“He (Sonowal) is a fake ‘Jatiya Nayak’ (national hero). He is a puppet of the BJP. The BJP government spoke about driving out the illegal Bangladeshis from Assam but now, they are welcoming the Bangladeshis. They have laid the red carpet for them with pushing for the Bill,” Gogoi said.
It may be noted that the All Assam Students’ Union had conferred the ‘Jatiya Nayak’ title on the then member of Lok Sabha Sonowal when the Supreme Court struck down the Illegal Migrants (Determination by Tribunal) (IMDT) Act in 2005 as a verdict of the Sarbananda Sonowal vs Union of India Case.
“The United Liberation Front of Asom-Independent came into existence due to illegal Bangladeshi problem in Assam. There is unrest in the state now. We had brought peace to the state but now there is an air of uncertainty all around,” he added.
Gogoi also said that the Centre’s decision to set up a high-level committee to look into the implementation of Clause 6 of the Assam Accord of 1985 is “useless”.
The committee includes retired IAS officer Subhash Das, former president of Assam Sahitya Sabha Dr Nagen Saikia, former editor Dhiren Bezbaruah, Assam Attorney General Ramesh Borpatragohain, educationalist Dr Mukuna Rajbangshi, former president of Assam Sahitya Sabha Rongbong Terang, joint secretary of MHA and a representative of All Assam Students’ Union. It is headed by retired IAS officer MP Bezbarauah. The panel will submit its report within six months.
