Hitting out at the alliance of the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), former Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi on March 14th, 2019 said that people of the state responded with “spontaneity and enthusiasm” to Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi, which clearly indicates that the wind was blowing in favour of the Congress ahead of the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.

“The AGP is power hungry and has betrayed the people of Assam by forging an alliance with the BJP which is pushing to pass the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016,” Gogoi said while addressing a press meet in Guwahati.

He added, “The BJP is the most unreliable political party I have ever seen in my life. The party has been blowing the trumpet of acche din for the last five years but I can hardly see good days in real.”

Gogoi further stated that the BJP follows the “ideology of German dictator Adolf Hitler”.

“Congress follows the ideologies and principles of Mahatma Gandhi. The wind is blowing in favour of Congress and the Lok Sabha election results will prove it,” he said.

The Lok Sabha elections in Assam will be held in three phases on April 11th, 18th and 23rd, 2019. The results of the election will be announced on May 23rd, 2019.

Secret killings

Refuting the allegations put forward by former Assam DGP G M Srivastava that the Congress party regained power in the 2001 Assembly elections with the help of the outlawed militant outfit, United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA), Gogoi said that the party was always against militancy.

He said, “If we had really taken the help of ULFA, then what was the ruling BJP doing at that time? Why they didn’t order a probe? I would say that the BJP along with AGP leader Prafulla Mahanta orchestrated the secret killings in Assam.”
