Former three-time Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi on October 15th, 2019, urged the state CM Sarbananda Sonowal to oppose the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill for the greater interest of the Assamese community.
“The Bharatiya Janata Party-led government is in deep slumber at this time of urgency to raise voice for the interest of the people of the state. It is unfortunate for the people of Assam that the BJP government who came into power by promising to safeguard the land is going to sell everything just for the sake of establishing their power,” the senior Congress leader said.
He further said, “Now, the young generation including all the people of Assam should be aware of the situation that Assam is heading towards. It has been seen that the Assamese identity as a whole is going to face a critical situation because the BJP Government is going to implement the CAB.”
Moreover, Gogoi, while taking a dig at the state’s Finance Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma for his role on the Bill issue, said, “Himanta is talkative. But, he keeps mum when it comes to speaking on the Bill.”
Besides, the leader, while coming down heavily on the Asom Gana Parishad, ruling BJP’s ally at the state, for its role on the Bill issue, said, “AGP has not played its role as a regional political party. It should raise voice against the Bill more firmly for the interest of the state and its indigenous people. Even, the party kept mum on BJP’s attempt to privatise the Numaligarh Refinery.”
On September 25th, 2019, Gogoi said the Bill, if passed, will nullify the National Register of Citizens. He accused the ruling BJP of doing conspiracy against the greater Assamese community by implementing the contentious bill. “BJP is trying to implement the bill at any cost. The state is under threat under the saffron party’s rule,” he said.
