GUWAHATI: Assam government was in fix over the selection of land for the cremation of the former Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi. While Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) demanded the state government to allot a chunk of land for the cremation ceremony of the popular chief minister at city’s Sachal area, the state government said that it’s considering to allot land either at Amingaon or Sonapur, on the outskirts of the city.
Following APCC’s demand, the state government had directed the Kamrup (metro) district administration to find a piece of land for the cremation of Gogoi. However, the metro district administration was unable to point out any piece of land within the city area till filling of this report.
Assam’s senior cabinet minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said, “The Sachal area is protected under wetland act and no activity is allowed there. We can allot land either in Sonapur and Amingaon if APCC has no problem. I will be happy to make the arrangement in Amingaon since it’s under my constituency.” Sarma represents the Jalukbari constituency.
Replying to Sarma’s proposal, APCC president Ripun Bora said that they would first like to inspect the spot before agreeing to the proposal.
“We have no objection if the place is suitable. We just want it to be nearby the city,” Bora replied.
Earlier, angry over the state government’s inability to allot land for the cremation purpose, APCC had said that it would perform the last rites in the Manabendra Sarma Complex.
Gogoi’s last rites will be performed on Thursday. His mortal remains will be kept at Srimanta Shankardeve Kalakhetra till then for public homage.
