Tension in Manipur University continues; students, police clash

Imphal, October 10: The situation in Manipur University (MU) turned violent on Wednesday after the police lathi charged and used tear gas to control the protesting students.

Enraged students demanded immediate realise of the arrested teachers and the students.

Two days ago, four students were injured when the police tried to disperse the agitating students who tried to raid the house of Prof K Yugindro Singh, the acting Vice-Chancellor of MU.

It is to mention that the students, representing six students’ bodies, are demanding unconditional release of six MU professors and 10 students who were arrested during the September 20 raids on MU hostels.

Meanwhile, various apex organizations from the hills have urged President Ram Nath Kovind to  intervene in the ongoing MU impasse.

On the other hand, Singh has apologised to Governor Najma Heptulla for stating that she extended “overt support” to agitators during a recent stir at the varsity.
