This Assam School Has A Unique Way To Teach Students How To End Plastic Menace

The staff and teachers have taken serious steps to tackle the plastic pollution crisis

Someone rightly said, “An idle teacher teaches from the heart and not from the book”. A teacher not only helps a kid acquire knowledge but also helps to mould their personality. They play a crucial role in the overall growth of a child.

Setting examples of an ideal teacher, a primary school in Assam’s Jorhat district has a very innovative and unique way to teach the students how to work towards the protection of the environment. The staff and teachers have taken serious steps to tackle the plastic pollution crisis that has diverse effects on the wildlife habitat and humans.

“For the past few years, our school has been taking various steps to curb plastic pollution. We have been creating awareness among our students on the hazardousness of plastics in our lives. We have received immense support and cooperation of our students, teaching staff, guardians, and locals,” said a teacher at the 157 No Bamkukurasuwa Primary School in Kakojan.

The students of the school are taught to re-use plastic bottles for the beautification of the school.

“We ask our students not to dump the plastics but to re-use them as much as possible. We ask them to bring all the plastics from their homes to re-use them in our school. We are using water and oil bottles for the beautification of our school. As part of our anti-plastic efforts, we have made colourful fencings, flower pots or vases, hanging flower baskets, and so on out of plastic bottles,” the teacher added.

The teachers of the school have resorted to making their students motivated through these co-curricular activities to attend school every day.

“We encourage our students to learn alongside play. We introduce them to the local medicinal plants and herbs found in Assam. Deviating a little from conventional teaching methods, we are using each and every wall of our school as a teaching and learning material(TLM). We want our students to enjoy the learning process,” another teacher added.

In addition, the teachers also provide different types of books to cultivate reading habits among the younger generation.
