    This Village In Assam Has Been Using Eco-Friendly Leaf Plates Way Before ‘Plastic Revolution’

    These women from Khairani village are making leaf plates for years now and it is a tradition in their community which has become the need of the hour

    While Prime Minister Narendra Modi has started a revolution against the usage of Single-Use Plastic (SUP) to make India clean and green, these women belonging to the Gorkha community from Khairani village in Tamulpur subdivision of Baksa district has been making and using eco-friendly leaf plates setting a vivid example that we don’t need plastic in our lives anymore.

    Use of plates and bowls made of banana and other plant leaves are the specialties of these community giving a range of eco-friendly options for the others to follow which cane be adopted in the daily lives.

    “We have been making plates and bowls using leaves for years now and we are proud that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has called for a revolution to shun plastic use as it is a menace in the society. We will continue our practice of making bowls and plates of leaves in the coming years as well,” a local woman said.

    “It’s a tradition in our Gorkha community to make bowls and plates of leaves. I also urge every single citizen to go ahead and remove plastic from their lives. We will soon supply these bowls and plates as we start getting orders,” added another woman.

    It may be mentioned that Modi imposed a nationwide ban on plastic usage from October 2nd, 2019 as part of efforts to reduce the pollution which is caused by SUP.

    The Baksa PHE under the flagship of Swachh Bharat Mission – Gramin, Assam has been motivating people to save money by using bowls and plates made of banana leaves as they are easily available in the villages.
