Students Of Barpeta Shows The Way, Condole Loss Of 50-year-Old Tree

The Finguagarh High School has taken a pledge to plant 10 saplings in memory of its 'beloved' tree

At a time when illegal felling of trees is adversely affecting our bio-diversity, this school located in a small hamlet under Bajali subdivision in Barpeta district is sending across a strong message that it is high time to conserve the environment.

On September 17th, 2019, the students and staffers of Finguagarh High School assembled in front of the school premises and jointly mourned the loss of their beloved 50-year-old bottlebrush tree. The cylindrical, brush-like flowers bearing tree came crashing down in the intervening night of September 16-17th due to storm and heavy rain which lashed the village.

The ME school was established way back in 1969 and the school authorities had planted a number of saplings including the bottlebrush. Later, the school was amalgamated into High School in 1987 and since then, the tree has been the students ‘favourite’.

The students decided to hold a shoka sabha (condolence meeting) in the school instead of the usual prayer meeting in memory of the bottlebrush tree. “The students shared a strong bond with the tree as it provided shade to sit, play under it. The tree also bore very beautiful flowers, the fragrance of which filled the air across the school premises. And when it fell, it really broke everyone’s heart, so we decided to mourn the loss,” said Munindra Das, Assistant Teacher of the school while speaking to TIME8.

“I believe that a tree is equal to 10 sons and we have together taken a pledge to plant 10 saplings in memory of losing the beautiful tree. The tree is still lying where it crashed down; we have not separated it from its roots,” Das added.

Meanwhile, Ananda Khataniar, brand ambassador of the State Forest Department praised the efforts of the school. The Chief Conservator of the Forest also conducted a mass plantation drive. As a part of the drive, 111 saplings were distributed among the students of the school.
