Guwahati: The outgoing Deputy Commissioner of Udalguri district in Assam, Prakash Ranjan Gharphalia, has tested COVID-19 positive on Thursday.

With this, the bureaucrat became the first Deputy Commissioner of Assam to report COVID-19 positive.

The development came a day after Gharphalia was transferred and posted as Secretary, State Election Commission and Purabi Konwar, CEO of Zila Parishad, Dhubri and PD, DRDA, Dhubri has been transferred and posted as the Deputy Commissioner of Udalguri.

However, he was yet to discharge his duty in Udalguri and take charge of the new position.

Udalguri health department sources said that the top official was under home quarantine at his official residence at Udalguri since Tuesday after he had shown some mild cough.

His swabs were immediately collected on Tuesday and then sent to Tezpur Medical College Hopsital where it was tested positive, sources confirmed.

However, the source of the infection was yet to be traced.

It was suspected that he might have been infected by some other government officials. It’s suspected that he had come in contact with some health workers in the district who had also tested COVID19 positive recently.

The health department has collected the swabs of all the officials of the deputy commissioner’s office, police forces and other government officials for tests.

A top official in the health directorate in Udalguri said that he would be shifted to Gauhati Medical College Hospital for further treatment.

On Thursday, Assam COVID 19 count reached 6,370, with nine deaths so far.
