Guwahati: A daily wage earner in Tripura reportedly committed suicide for failing to provide a smartphone to his 15-year-old daughter for her online studies amid the closure of schools due to the COVID-19.
The deceased indentified as Sukumar Bhowmik, was being pressurized by his 15-year-old elder daughter to buy an android.
Police said the deceased man chose to take the extreme step after he could not afford to buy a smart phone. Police said he had bought her a ‘normal’ phone, upon which he was scolded by both his wife and daughter.
His daughter reportedly refused to accept the ordinary phone, police said it might have triggered his actions.
Sources said that the incident reportedly left him shattered and he chose to hang himself in a closed room in his home at Madhupur in western Tripura”s Sepahijala district early on Wednesday.
Family persons said that the deceased was down on his income owing to the COVID crisis.
Tripura Government has recently announced to provide Rs 5,000 each to 14,608 students of the final year at the undergraduate level for buying smartphones under the Mukhyamantri Yuba Yogayog Yojana.
