Guwahati, February 27, 2019
The unemployment crisis and the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016 are two major planks the Congress is banking on in the Lok Sabha polls, said Luinzinho Faleiro, AICC general secretary, in-charge Meghalaya and Arunachal Pradesh.
Addressing a presser here on February 27th, 2019, Faleiro said, “The Northeast suffered a lot due to the Citizenship Bill. The civil and student bodies approached Congress president Rahul Gandhi over the Bill. Congress is the only option for the people of the Northeast.”
He added, “The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) wanted to harm the culture, tradition and language of the people of the Northeast by bringing in the Bill. We were firm on our stand that we will not support the Bill.”
Faleiro further said that Rahul stood firm and defeated the anti-constitutional Citizenship (Amendment) Bill. It may be mentioned that in a major setback for the ruling BJP, the Bill was not tabled in the Upper House of the Parliament on February 13th, 2019 following which the Bill lapsed.
The BJP government at the Centre has been pitching for the early passage of the legislation. Facing stiff opposition from its own allies in the northeast, the Modi government has opted against an ordinance on the Citizenship Bill on February 19th, 2019.
“Unemployment is going to be one of our poll agendas. Only through manipulation, the BJP can win 21 seats out of 25 in the Northeast,” he said.
In the last general elections, the Congress won just three seats out of the 14 Lok Sabha seats in the state while the BJP won seven seats. The general elections, 2019 are expected to be held in April and May 2019 to constitute the 17th Lok Sabha.
