Guwahati: Union Ministry for Water Resources released Rs.125 crores from the Flood Control Fund to Assam for the current fiscal, official said on Friday.
Pijush Hazarika, Assam’s Minister for Water Resources, met with Union Minister of Jal Shakti Gajendra Singh Shekhawat in New Delhi on Friday to express gratitude for the assistance of releasing Rs.125 crores from the Flood Control Fund for the current fiscal year.
Meanwhile, Hazarika also urged Shekhawat to provide more funding under the scheme in the coming days to help with projects that will rid Assam of the flood hazard.
He added that due to irregularities committed by the erstwhile government, central funds under the scheme had been discontinued since 2016.
“The funds were released this year by the Jal Shakti Ministry due to Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s relentless efforts,” Hazarika stated.
As part of its efforts to control water levels in rivers during the monsoon season, the state administration plans to embark on a comprehensive initiative to create ponds near rivers, official claimed.
