Video of Guwahati police officials partying, violating lockdown rules goes viral: Probe ordered

Sources said it was a birthday party of one of the senior cops from Panbazar police station where many police personnel were present

Guwahati: A group of city police officials including a few of the senior cops from the city’s central police district came under severe criticism after they were found to be partying and violating lockdown rules in the city recently.

Assam Chief Secretary Kumar Sanjay Krishna has immediately ordered a probe after a video went viral where Guwahati city police personnel were seen partying on a ship on Brahamputra river on Monday night.

Sources said it was a birthday party of one of the senior cops from Panbazar police station in which several numbers of police personnel were present. In the video, they were also seen consuming liquor.

In the order, the Chief Secretary Kumar Sanjay Krishna has directed Guwahati Police Commissioner Munna Prasad Gupta to conduct an inquiry and take disciplinary proceedings against those found guilty.

“Enclosed please find a very damaging newspaper report with photographs of police officers attending a party with alcoholic beverages reportedly during curfew hours last evening. This reflects very poorly on the policemen and displays a total disregard to orders under Disaster Act,” the order said.

It added further, “You (Police Commissioner) are therefore directed to enquire into the matter submit a report and initiate disciplinary proceedings with intimation to the undersigned It is also directed that policemen under your command may be directed to scrupulously follow orders issued by the government and not display actions which are detrimental to the rule of law.”
