GUWAHATI: In multiple raids against illegal drug rackets in the city, police here has seized a huge cache of drugs worth around Rs 50 lakhs and nabbed at least five since Saturday.
The Assam police have been running an episodic operation against the drug rackets recently. Chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has ordered the state police to launch a ‘war’ against drugs.
A Special Operation Group (SOG) with Geetanagar police, multiple operations were conducted in Guwahati, Kamrup rural, Darrang, and Mangaldoi district on Saturday night.
Several kilos of drugs worth Rs 50 lakhs were seized and five youths were arrested.
The arrested persons were identified as Bhargab Giri alias Babu (24), Mrigen Bongjang (25), Baihata Chariali’s Khalilur Rahman (32), Ashiq Ali (18), and Mongoldoi’s Matiur Rahaman (24).
Police received the information that two persons were selling drugs in zoo road tiniali’s Rupali path. Acting on the lead, Geetanagar police and Special operation group (SOG) commenced the operation in Byelane 2. No.1 house of Rupali path and nabbed Bhargav Giri and Mrigen Bongjang along with the drugs.
Based on the revelation of the two arrestees, raids were conducted in Baihata Charial, Kamrup rural, and Mangoldoi where three others were held. They were identified as Kholilul Rahman, Ashik Ali and Motiur Rahman were too arrested.
Besides drugs worth around Rs50 lakh, a cash amount of Rs 4 lakh and a vehicle were seized in the operations.
Last week also, city police intercepted a truck and recovered 44,000 bottles of Codeine-based cough syrup, valued at more than Rs. 55 lakhs and nabbed prime accused Zakir Hussain of Narengi.
