Guwahati : A ruling party legislator from Assam faced massive criticism on social media after a video of him taking a piggyback ride to a flood rescue boat while he was on an inspection of inundated areas in the state.

The MLA from Lumding, Sibu Mishra, was termed as ‘insensitive’ as heavy flood has been wracking the state and its people for almost a week now. Till Wednesday, nine people have lost their lives in flood and over six lakh people remained affected.

In the video, Mishra while taking stock of Hojai area in the district was seen being carried by a rescue worker to a boat located only a few steps away. It was also barely knee deep water.

Following the controversy, Mishra on the other hand claimed that he was unwell and the worker volunteered to carry him to the boat.

Netizens lambasted saying that Mishra who being a public representative have taken advantage of his position and took the piggyback ride while mocking the people who remained highly impacted.

Assam has been reeling under heavy flood and landslide as major part of Barak Valley remained disconnected with other parts of the state. Indian Air Force has been airdropping essential items to Dima Hasao district, worst hit in the state.

Neighbouring states like Tripura and Mizoram who highly dependent on national highways and railway routes for essential commodities have already started rationing fuel for motor bike and vehicle owners in their states fearing a long term crisis.
