Donning the football jersey Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh flaunted his soccer skills recently at the floodlighted Khuman Lampak stadium located in the Imphal city.
Singh in a series of tweets shared his love for the hearty game as he took part in the opening match of the RK Jaichandra Singh Manipur Youth League.
Before joining politics, the Manipuri leader started his career as a sportsperson. He was recruited in the Border Security Force (BSF) playing for its team in domestic competitions that won the Durand Cup in 1981.
In a video shared on Singh’s Twitter handle which has currently over 67k views boasted of his first goal in a match between the Chief Minister’s 11 and the Chief Secretary’s 11. “I did it ! Scored the 1st goal of the 1st match under floodlight between the Chief Minister’s 11 and the Chief Secretary’s 11 at the Khuman Lampak Main Stadium” he wrote.
The Chief Minister garnered heaps of praise from netizens for the feat as the Indian Football Team also applauded the goal with “Bend it like N Biren Singh” tweet.
Union Sports Minister Kiren Rijiju too praised the goal with a compliment– “What a shot”.
The former sportsperson must have missed being in the drills as he shared another video writing: “Old habits die hard! Had a feel of the football just before the match.”
Singh resigned from the BSF and turned to journalism and began the vernacular daily Naharolgi Thoudang in 1992 and worked as the editor till 2001 before joining politics in 2002.
