    Water-Logging Wreaks Havoc In Guwahati

    Guwahati, July 14, 2019

The continuous downpour in Guwahati has caused severe water-logging in several parts of the city including the low-lying areas causing serious concern for the citizens. As per latest reports, the water level in river Brahmaputra has exceeded the danger level of 49.68 meters and is expected to rise to 50.55 meters by July 15th, 2019.

A number of dwelling houses located near to the Brahmaputra were washed away in the flood water causing serious communication cramp for the people. Two parks namely Shankardev and Azan Pir Udyan, located along the banks of the river Brahmaputra, are inundated by the flood water.

Also, the 35-feet-high statue of Ahom General Lachit Borphukan installed in the middle of the Brahmaputra is on the verge to get submerged as the water level continues to increase in the river.

A statue of Lord Vishnu sitting on Sheshnag placed on a vertical pillar in the Brahmaputra river near Chakreshwar temple in Kalipur also seems to be on the verge of drowning.

The people of the waterlogged localities have alleged the concerned authorities of not taking any effective steps for their relief. The monsoon spells have wreaked havoc in the localities of Fancy Bazar areas, Chandmari, Anupam Nagar, Sijubari, Hatigaon main road and so on.

The Inland Water Transport Division has temporarily suspended the operation of all departmental boats/ vessels in the Guwahati-based ferry services under it from July 12th, 2019 till further order.
