Firebrand peasant leader Akhil Gogoi on February 13, 2019, hailed the people of Assam for vehemently opposing the controversial Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016.
The Bill lapsed on February 13th, 2019 with the Rajya Sabha being adjourned sine die on the last day of the Budget session, the last parliamentary session before the Lok Sabha polls. Gogoi lauded all the members of the opposition parties and members of the 70 indigenous organisations including Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti, Asom Jatityatabdi Yuva Chhatra Parishad, All Assam Students’ Union and the intellectual society from Assam.
Gogoi also heaped praises on Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma for his “commendable role” in this whole journey. “We have won today. It’s a historic day for the people of Assam. We were not expected this,” he said.
“When Rajya Sabha Chairman M Venkaiah Naidu adjourned the session and asked everyone to stand-up, we stood up too. The securities asked us to sit down…we shouted in joy. We have finally won,” he added.
Gogoi appreciated the regional political parties of the Northeast, Janata Dal (United), Shiv Sena, Biju Janata Dal, Samajwadi Party for opposing the Bill.
“We will organise a felicitation programme to honour the each and everyone who supported the movement against the Bill,” Gogoi added.
