Guwahati: Northeastern states were expected to witness moderate to heavy rainfall over the next couple of days with a fresh low-pressure area has begun to brew over northern Bay of Bengal, and it may gain more strengthen over the weekend.
Fairly widespread to widespread rains with isolated heavy falls (64.5 mm-115.5 mm), thunderstorms and lightning were expected to lash Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura from Friday to next Tuesday (August 12-16); Assam and Meghalaya between Saturday and Tuesday (August 13-16); and Arunachal Pradesh on Saturday and Sunday (August 13 and 14).
A yellow watch has been placed over Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura from Friday to Tuesday.
As per the weather department, heavy rains may lash Guwahati and Aizawal on Friday and Saturday, and Kohima and Imphal on Saturday.
So far this monsoon season, Assam (1046 mm), Meghalaya (1935.5 mm), Arunachal Pradesh (975.8 mm), Nagaland (573 mm) and Mizoram (927.6) have all witnessed ‘normal’ rains.
However, Manipur (406.9 mm) and Tripura (658.9 mm) received significantly below-normal precipitation, having recorded deficits of 41% and 21%, respectively.
