Guwahati: Mirabai Chanu won the silver medal and became the first Indian to win an Olympic medal at the 2020 Tokyo Games in the Women’s 49 kg category in weightlifting.
Chanu, who is from Manipur, lifted 84kg and 87kg successfully but failed to lift 89kg as she was placed in second spot after snatch. China’s Zhihu Hou managed to lift 94kg to create an Olympic record.
However, new Olympic record was registered by Mirabai Chanu with a successful lift of 115kg in clean and jerk.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi took Twitter to congratulate on the first medal brought to the country by Chanu. He wrote, “Could not have asked for a happier start to Tokyo2020! India is elated by @mirabai_chanu’s stupendous performance. Congratulations to her for winning the Silver medal in weightlifting. Her success motivates every Indian. #Cheer4India #Tokyo2020”
Mirabai Chanu, the 26-year-old weightlifter hailing from Manipur’s Kakching district is the 2017 world champion in weightlifting. Chanu was placed second on the Absolute Ranking List issued by International Weightlifting Federation after winning a bronze medal in the recently concluded Asian Championship in Tashkent, after which she secured her place in Tokyo Olympics.
After Rio Olympics 2016, this is Chanu’s second participation at the prestigious sporting event.
