Congress leader Rahul Gandhi came down heavily on the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) while addressing a massive rally in Guwahati on December 28th, 2019.
He led a protest rally against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act at Khanapara Veterinary College playground in the city.
“I have said it several times in my last election rallies. If BJP comes to power in Assam, they will destroy the peace and brotherhood in the state. I am sad that it came true today. I have learnt a lot about brotherhood from Assam, the state which I visited for the first time 15 years back. Wherever the BJP goes, it spreads hate. The BJP doesn’t want to listen to the voice of people,” he said.
Gandhi also said that his party will also “stand with the people of Assam”. He mentioned that he derives inspiration and strength from the teaching of Srimanta Sankardev.
He added, ” In Assam and in other states, the youths are protesting. Why do you (BJP) have to shoot and kill them? I fear that Assam is returning to path of violence because of BJP’s policies. We won’t allow the BJP and Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) to destroy the history, language and culture of Assam. We also won’t let Nagpur or RSS rule Assam.”
The Congress leader also asked the people of the state to unite against the BJP in order to protect its history, language, culture and tradition. “The spirit of Assam Accord which brought in peace should not be ruined. The Accord was prepared by the people of Assam. The BJP leaders have no time to listen to the voice of our people.”
After the rally, Gandhi also met the family members of Sam Stafford at Hatigaon area in Guwahati who was killed in police firing.
Five people died and several others sustained injuries in the violent incidents during the anti-CAA protests in Assam earlier this month.
