Who is Assam’s next Chief Minister? Decision Delayed Due to Bengal Violence

GUWAHATI: The BJP is likely to finalise its choice of chief ministerial nominee for Assam within the next couple of days. The delay was believed to be caused due to the deteriorating law and order situation in the neighbouring state of West Bengal.

Senior BJP leader Himanta Biswa Sarma said, “The decision will be taken by the party heads who are currently busy with the situation in Bengal.”

Party sources in Delhi claimed that the process would be over in a day or two as internal consultation within the party has begun amid suspense over whether it will continue with incumbent chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal or bring in a new face.

In Assam, besides Sonowal, Sarma’s name has been making rounds as the next state chief minister.

Earlier Assam BJP chief Ranjeet Dass said that decision will be taken by the party’s parliamentary board soon. The central observers are likely to preside over the meeting with its newly-elected party MLAs in Guwahati where they will pick their leader.

Usually, the central observers convey the choice of the party top brass to the state leadership which in turn is endorsed by the MLAs.

The ruling BJP-led NDA has retained its grip on Assam, bagging 75 of the 126 assembly seats, while the opposition Congress-led grand alliance managed to clinch just 50 seats. The saffron party alone won 60 constituencies, the same as in 2016.
