GUWAHATI: Even after two weeks since the state poll results were out on May 2, the Congress party was yet to fix its legislative party leader for the state of Assam. The leader from the party which would once again lead the opposition bench in the Assam Assembly, slated to be starting from Ma 21, would also act as the leader of the opposition (LOP).
Though during the last five years, Debabrata Saikia was the Congress legislature party leader as well as the LOP, names several other veteran Congress leaders have also surfaced to be in the race.
Party insiders claimed that two other Congress leaders-Bharat Narah and Rockybul Hussain were also probable candidates for the Congress legislature party (CLP) leader.
Saikia said, “Already in a meeting after the poll results were out, Congress chief Sonia Gandhi has been entrusted with the responsibility to select the CLP or the LOP. The decision should be out very soon.”
He added that the announcement was expected within a day or two.
In the state polls, Congress managed to secure 29 seats (29.7 per cent vote share) while its ‘Mahajot’ allies AIUDF won 16, and Bodoland People’s Front bagged four. The Communist Party of India (Marxist) secured one seat.
