Guwahati, December 1: Internationally acclaimed boxer Mary Kom has resigned from her post of the national observer. The five times world champion took this extreme step after Sports Minister Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore announced that this position will not considered for sportsperson who are still active in their respective field.
The gold medalist clearly mentioned that she took up this position only because she was requested. She was among 12 national observers appointed by the then Sports Minister Vijay Goel in March. The list includes other celebrated sports person such as Abhinav Bindra, Sushil Kumar, Akhil Kumar and more. Mary Kom, who is also a Rajya Sabha MP also said that she has formally resigned 10 days back, after discussing this matter with Mr Rathore.
Our 35-year-old Olympic bronze-medalist also made it clear that she had was never interested in this position from the initial stage and have no complaints whatsoever as her hands are already full with various other projects. It is to be noted that unlike other renowned sports persons, Mary Kom has contributed a great deal for the betterment and welfare of the state and country.
