As protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) continued in Assam with people staging dharnas in various cities in the state, Assam Finance Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma tweeted that people of the state will hear “some good news soon”.
Sarma on January 1st, 2020 met Union Home Minister Amit Shah in the national capital. Taking to the microblogging site Twitter, the Assam Minister said that he had a long discussion with Shah about the “identity issues of Assamese”.
“Happy to spend this #NewYear afternoon with Sri @AmitShah whom I adore for his clear thoughts. Had a long discussion with him about identity issues of Assamese, aspirations of our tribals community and strengthening nationalist thought process in NE. Will hear some good news soon,” he tweeted.
Shah chaired a meeting of party leaders on January 1st, 2020 to discuss the fallout of the CAA. The party leaders also discussed a roadmap for countering protests against the new citizenship law across the country.
On the other hand, Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal said that his government is committed to safeguarding – jati, mati, bheti (community, land, home) of the indigenous people.
He also mentioned that his government has forwarded suggestions to the Centre, which is in process of framing the rule of the CAA, to incorporate their point of view to protect the interest of the indigenous people.
